Job summary

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson is seeking a student intern to support civil transportation projects in our Tampa, FL office. You will assist senior designers, prepare sketches and drawings, and learn company standards while contributing to real project deliverables.

This internship offers hands-on exposure to Open Roads, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and drafting workflows, with mentorship from licensed engineers and opportunities to participate in team meetings and site visits.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or current undergraduate pursuing a related field.
• Undergraduate ABET-accredited civil engineering with interest in transportation projects.
• Familiarity with design and drafting software is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist senior engineers with design tasks, research, simple studies and layout support.
• Help prepare drawings and documents for programming, schematic design and construction phases.
• Support creation of presentation and marketing materials; participate in team meetings.
• Assist with site visits, RFI responses, shop drawing reviews and updating record drawings.
• Follow QA procedures and learn department standards; develop basic design and technical skills.

An intern supports the assigned design department by assisting with a variety of tasks, including special project assignments and active participation in project design and documentation, to gain practical experience and support their educational development.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Assist senior or lead ( engineers, project managers) with basic design tasks, including research, simple studies, and layout support
• Help prepare drawings and documents for programming, schematic design, modeling, graphics, design development, and construction phases
• Support the creation of presentation and marketing materials
• Assist with construction phase activities, including participating in site visits, supporting RFI responses, reviewing shop drawings, and helping update record drawings
• Follow established quality control procedures and ask questions as needed
• Learn and apply department and company standards and best practices
• Develop basic design, analysis, and technical skills through hands‑on experience
• Participate in team meetings and collaborate with team members
• Receive guidance and direction from supervisors and team leaders
• Collaborate with architects, engineers, interior designers, and other multidisciplinary team members

Required Skills

Required Experience

• High school graduate or currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in a related field
• Full-time student currently pursuing an ABET accreditedundergraduate degree in civil engineering with an interest in transportation projects

Qualifications Preferred

• Coursework in a related field
• Previous internship or relevant work experience
• Familiarity with design and production software, such as Open Roads Design and/or AutoCAD Civil3D, with the ability to use these tools to develop project documents and collaborate with project team members

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
