Position type: Full-time. Salary: $47,008.00 - $69,118.40 annually.

Job Description

Do you love ensuring projects are built correctly? As a Construction Highway Technician Senior, you will help make roads safer through sampling, testing, and inspecting construction projects year-round. You will contribute your knowledge toward the Iowa Department of Transportation's Mission of Making Lives Better Through Transportation and the CORE values: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception. A CDL permit is required upon hire; you must obtain Class A and endorsements/restrictions within 5 months after hire. CDL Training for Iowa DOT employees is provided; Entry Level Driver Training is available if you do not yet possess Class A and endorsements/restrictions. Location: Jefferson Resident Construction Engineer Office. Shift: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday–Friday. Hours may vary and may include on-call 24 hours during emergencies or weather. Some overnight travel may be required.

Responsibilities (independent responsibilities include):

  • Completing inspection on highway construction projects
  • Maintaining detailed records of all project activities (vouchers, as-builts, progress reports)
  • Acting as liaison with Iowa DOT staff, government officials, contractors, and the public
  • Performing mathematical calculations to ensure compliance with project plans, percent complete, quantity used, and areas measured
  • Ensuring work is completed according to plans, specifications, and contract documents
  • Performing basic office administration via technical devices and software
  • Overseeing teammates assigned to specific projects
  • Completing routine maintenance and service of DOT equipment and vehicles
  • Operating snow and ice removal equipment

This position requires high computer use and proficiency with typing and digital data entry.

Requirements:

  • May be required to obtain testing material certification, specialized equipment training, or other certifications as needed for construction inspection

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following: 1) Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency plus four years of full-time work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection/testing. 2) A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience, where thirty semester hours of post-high-school education in relevant fields equals one year of experience. 3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch with eighteen months of full-time work as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician. 4) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch with twenty-four months of full-time work as a Highway Technician Associate. Additional Qualification Requirements
  • Positions require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire; a valid CDL with required endorsements must be obtained within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority and maintained to continue employment.
  • Pre-employment drug screen and ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program in accordance with federal regulations.
  • Post-offer, pre-employment physical required to verify ability to perform duties.
  • May require Herbicide Applicator certification within a specified period after hire.
  • Certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa DOT; and/or other required certifications.
  • Within a period after hire, may be required to attend a bridge inspection course per National Bridge Inspection Standards.
  • Travel, including overnight travel, may be required. Arrange transportation to/from assigned work areas.
  • Employees in designated positions may need to reside within a defined driving time from the work location.
  • Employees must respond to emergency situations as required.
  • Employees must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
