Job summary

Commonwealth of Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is hiring a Highway Technician Assistant II in Covington, KY. The role involves basic to intermediate roadway maintenance tasks, operating dump trucks with snow plow, and supporting drainage and guardrail work.

The ideal candidate will have two years of construction or highway maintenance experience and a valid Class B CDL. This is a full-time position with potential overtime and a local wage including a $3.00 per hour locality premium.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in engineering technology or related field can substitute for two years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operate dump trucks with snow plow and salt spreader.
  • Operate intermediate equipment (asphalt distributors, backhoes, loaders, rollers, etc.).
  • Flag for traffic control and serve as QA inspector for roadworks.
  • Perform basic surveying and other duties as assigned.

By joining our Kenton County Unit as a Highway Technician Assistant II, you'll have the opportunity to perform basic level work and assists with intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations. Learns to operate intermediate equipment.

Summary Of Responsibilities
  • Operate dump trucks with snow plow and salt spreader to work in the winter months.
  • Operate intermediate equipment such as asphalt distributors, backhoes, belt loaders, concrete mixers, front-end loaders, hydro-seeders, pipe cleaners, road wideners, rollers, skid steers, and tow pavers. Also rolling of hot mix, application of chemicals. Installation of drainage structures.
  • Flag for operations requiring traffic control.
  • Serve as quality assurance inspector for pipe laying, concrete coring, earthwork, asphalt laying and guardrail installation for compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Flagger to provide traffic control.
  • Perform basic surveying activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION

High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS

Must have two years of construction or highway maintenance experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE

Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology, or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.)

Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class B commercial driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 1 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
