By joining our Project Delivery and Preservation Branch I as a Highway Technician Assistant I in ShelbyCounty,you’ll have the opportunity to you’ll have the opportunity to operate basic automotive and power equipmentused in road construction and maintenance such as single axle trucks (dump, flatbed, pickup), snowplows andsalt spreaders.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Use construction equipment to maintain roads
- Use equipment to control vegetation along roads.
- Use equipment to perform snow removal on highways.
- Use equipment to spread salt on the highways to prevent icing.
- Flag for traffic control.
Ideal candidate will have experience in:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Driver's License
- Eligibility to obtain a Commercial Driver's License
- Ability to perform general Labor work
- Willingness to work outdoors

Within 12 months of employment in this job classification, employees in this classification must furnish the agency's appointing authority with documentation that he or she holds a valid Class B commercial driver's license.
Within one year of employment in this job classification, the employee must complete First Aid and Snow and Ice Training and must possess Traffic Control, Flagger and OSHA 10 Certifications or equivalent. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area, and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction.
Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
