Job description

About This Position:

We are seeking a qualified Project Engineer with 8-15 years' experience to become a part of our growing Highway Design Group for our Albany, Syracuse, and White Plains offices. Our highway engineers work on a variety of projects and interact with traffic engineers, structural engineers, and our construction inspection staff.

As an Engineer IV you will plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate detailed phases of engineering work as part of a major project or an overall project of moderate scope. Your work will involve conventional engineering practice and may include a variety of complex features. Typical projects include long‑range transportation planning, traffic impact studies, site planning and design, highway and traffic signal design, transit planning and design, and bridge design. Engineer IV may require work outside normal business hours to meet client requests or attend meetings.

Responsibilities:

• Develop roadway, trail, and sidewalk designs
• Intersection design and layout, including roundabouts and traffic signals
• Check design calculations prepared by others
• Prepare construction contract documents
• Coordinate project activities, write reports, and perform estimating
• Directly coordinate with clients

Essential Job Functions:

• Perform broader assignments than an Engineer III
• Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of engineering work in part of a major project
• Plan and conduct work requiring judgment and independent evaluation
• Apply standard technology and procedures
• Conduct analysis choosing appropriate applications
• Anticipate larger project objectives
• Complete intermediate and limited complex engineering assignments
• Perform cost and quantity estimating
• Attend project meetings and present specific aspects of engineering assignments
• Responsible for report writing for basic and some intermediate projects
• Act as project engineer of basic projects – staffing, scope, schedule, budget
• Assume client relations for routine basic projects
• Delegate and supervise Engineer III’s and technicians as needed
• Coordinate multi‑discipline projects at an intermediate level
• Receive direction on technical guidance for complex problems
• Prepare basic proposals, including scope of work, hour planning, and fee estimates
• Manage invoices
• Track project progress relative to budget expenditures

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program or an equivalent; Professional Engineering (P.E.) licensure required
• 4+ years of experience in a similar engineering role
• Proficiency with MicroStation, Inroads, and AutoTurn
• Working knowledge of the NYSDOT Highway Design Manual
• Active membership in a professional practice organization

Pay Range:

• Albany, NY / Syracuse, NY: $44/hour – $60/hour
• White Plains, NY (Westchester): $47/hour – $69/hour

Pay is based on applicant ability/experience and will be rated accordingly.
