Job summary

GFT is seeking a Highway Project Engineer to join our Transportation group in Morristown, East Brunswick, or Marlton, NJ. The role follows a hybrid work model with regular office attendance in the listed New Jersey locations.

You will design roadway projects, coordinate with NJDOT/NJTA, mentor junior staff, and lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver on time and within budget. Strong NJ design experience and PE eligibility are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering required.
• PE license in New Jersey or reciprocity within 1 year preferred.
• 8–10 years of transportation design experience with highway design skills.
• Proficiency in MicroStation/OpenRoads and MS Office essential.

Responsibilities

• Design roadway projects from concept to final design and provide construction support.
• Prepare plans, specs, cost estimates, and final bid packages.
• Coordinate with client staff, project managers, and subconsultants.
• Mentor junior engineers and manage design tasks within schedule and budget.

GFT is seeking a Highway Project Engineer to join our Transportation group in Morristown, NJ, East Brunswick, NJ or Marlton, NJ. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance in our Morristown, NJ, East Brunswick, NJor Marlton office.

What you’ll be challenged to do:

As a Project Engineer, you will contribute to the design and development of roadway and highway projects across New Jersey. You’ll support project execution for clients such as NJDOT, NJTA, and other area agencies, working under the direction of senior engineers and project managers. You’ll take ownership of design tasks, prepare plans and technical documents, support project management activities, and help ensure projects are delivered on time and to quality standards. You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and provide guidance to junior staff, while continuing to grow your technical expertise and client-facing experience in transportation infrastructure work.

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

• Perform engineering design tasks for roadway projects from concept development to final design, including construction support
• Develop plans, specifications, cost estimates, reports, and prepare final bid packages
• Establish working relationships and contact with client technical staff and project managers
• Provide engineering design services ontraditional design-bid-build projects and design-build highway projects
• Manage and mentor junior engineers on project assignments
• Coordinate design activities and meetings between design staff, subconsultants, and client managers
• Coordinate the planning, staffing, scheduling, budget management, quality control, of subconsultants and internal technical and support staff
• Participate in project decisions regarding technical approaches, cost and scheduling performance
• Lead projects and complete tasks within schedule and budget with teams comprised of different disciplines
• Project QA/QC
• Assist project managers with other various tasks

What you'll bring to our firm:

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in New Jersey, or ability to obtain through reciprocity within one year
• 8-10 years of engineering experience with broad knowledge of transportation design and strong technical skills in highway design
• Proficient in MicroStation, OpenRoads, and Microsoft Office
• NJDOT or NJTA design experience
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset

What we prefer you bring:

• Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D
• New Jersey client relationships

Compensation:

The range for this position is salary range is $115,000-$145,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
