Job summary

Montgomery County, Tennessee is seeking an Equipment Operator to maintain right-of-ways for county roads and to deliver materials to designated sites. The role requires a valid driver’s license and a CDL A or B, at least a high school diploma, and one year of related experience.

You will operate light and some heavy equipment, perform roadside maintenance, and support asphalt patching and drainage work. The position is full-time with overtime as needed.

Job description

This position is responsible for operating light equipment, tractors, trucks or other vehicles to maintain right of ways for County roads or to deliver materials to designated sites. Also performs semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks for the County as needed.

Responsibilities

Department: Highway

Pay Grade: 75, Non-Exempt

Starting hourly rate: $23.29

Minimum Experience:One year of general maintenance, light equipmentoperationor related experience.

Minimum Education:High School diploma or equivalent.

Certifications, Licenses:

• Must hold a valid Driver’s license and a valid CDL A or B.
• A pre-employment criminal background check and submission to drug testing forcommonly-abusedcontrolled substancesisrequired.

This positionis responsible foroperating light equipment, tractors,trucksor other vehicles tomaintainright of ways for County roads or to deliver materials todesignatedsites.Also performs semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks for the County as needed.

GENERAL POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.

• Operates light equipment such as mower, tractor, mower trim, chipper, front-endloaderand dump truck to perform assigned tasks relating to roadsides and right of way maintenance.
• Drives various trucks and equipment to transport and load and/or unload materials such as hot mix, dirt, rock, wood, etc. at a designated highway construction site.
• Erects traffic signs near construction areas and flags traffic through and around construction or work areas.
• Performs roadside duties, including mowing and planting grass seed; pruning and removal of trees; chipping brush and removing debris.
• Performs temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, patching holes;operatessweeper to clean/prepare parking lots to be paved.
• Mayoperatestreet roller to spread hot or cold mix when tying driveway to road.
• Mayoperatesnowplow and salt spreader truck when inclement weather occurs.
• Maintains ditch, waterways, and storm drain for proper drainage as needed.
• Inspects truck to make sure truck and equipment areoperatingproperly and safely.Performs routine maintenance on light equipment and trucks.
• Ensures all work is done according to standard practices, design specifications, and County and localbuilding codes.
• Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all County safety regulations; ensures all regulationspertaining tothe safe use of equipment are understood and followed.
• Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority.Follows all policies for reporting.
• Able to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no fiscal responsibilities.

• Representsthe Department and County to other County staff and members of the public.

Works under direct supervision of the Foreman. Incumbenthas no supervisory responsibilities.

• Basic practices, methods, and equipment used ingrounds maintenance and general maintenance work.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
• Hazardous chemicals,herbicidesand fertilizers.

• Operation and maintenance of alllight and some heavy power-driven equipment.
• Practices, methods, and materials used in grounds maintenance and general maintenance work.
• Traffic laws and ordinancesand rules involved in heavy equipment operations.
• Utilitymarkings and clearances and rules for safe equipment operationin close proximity tounderground and overhead utility facilities.
• Constructionindustry safety rules and ability toutilizeall Personal Protective Equipment necessary.
• Knowledge of legal load limits for assigned equipment and vehicles.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work environment includes frequent exposure to wetor humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and outdoor weather conditions.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/ACTIVITIES:

• This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 75 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, frequently requires using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and requires walking on uneven terrain, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing stairs and ladders, and reaching with hands and arms.
