Job Duties

Individuals selected must be able to respond to emergency callout within 1 hour during inclement weather, including all snow and ice conditions, to be considered for this position. Duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort involving exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.
  2. Operate plows during winter operations and obtain the necessary equipment certifications.
  3. Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications

Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1: Must be 18 years old, pass physical/medical examination and drug test*, and possess a Class D Driver License.

Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2: Must be 18 years old, pass physical/medical examination* and drug test; possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction, and be evaluated on their ability to satisfactorily operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment.

Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Satisfactory completion of the Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 or one year of experience in the operation of highway construction, maintenance equipment, or other vehicles in excess of 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with air brakes, and possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT-specified endorsements.

All candidates must pass a pre-employment physical/medical examination* and drug test prior to beginning employment. Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment.

Salary Breakdown

The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1 (SG 6) is $47,694.00. The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 (SG 7) is $49,833.00. The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (SG 8) is $52,136.00.
