Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a Bridge Maintenance Worker to support district operations.

Responsibilities include operating snooper and boom trucks for bridge work, performing crane rigging and signaling, and carrying out concrete and wood form carpentry tasks as part of routine maintenance and repairs.

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of related work experience or equivalent.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license on entry.
• Must obtain Class A CDL within six months of placement.
• Overtime/night/weekend work may be required during hazardous weather or emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Operates equipment for bridge removal, construction, and maintenance in District 5.
• Performs crane rigging and signaling to secure loads.
• Performs bridge repairs and carpentry tasks as needed, including concrete spall and joint repairs.
• Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes and excavators for maintenance tasks.
• Assists in layout and measurement using levels and grade rods.
• May work extended hours or 12-hour shifts in emergencies or bad weather.
• Operates bridge scaffold and tractor-trailer setups for maintenance work in District 5.

Responsibilities

• Operates specialized equipment that may include but is not limited to snooper truck and boom truck for use in the removal, construction, and maintenance of bridges in District 5.
• Performs crane rigging and signaling duties to ensure loads moved by crane are safe and properly secured.
• Performs various skilled labor for bridge repairs including but is not limited to concrete spall repair, bridge joint repairs, pile repair, bridge rail repair, etc. Operates common power tools i.e. drills, chainsaws, etc. Constructs wood forms and perform other miscellaneous carpentry projects.
• Performs skilled bridge maintenance worker functions and operates heavy equipment to include but is not limited to backhoe and excavators.
• Assists in the operation of levels, laser levels, grade rods, etc., in the layout of construction and maintenance projects.
• Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and/or 12-hour shifts.
• Operates hydraulically operated bridge scaffold and tractor trailer 5th wheel combination (varying manual transmissions and trailer styles) for use in the maintenance of bridges in District 5.

Required Qualifications

• Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
• May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.

Physical Demands

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
