Job summary

Responsibilities

• Directs crews in construction, repair, and preservation activities of roads and bridges in the district, including deck, superstructure, and substructure work.
• Inputs data and runs reports in the maintenance data management system; performs QA/QC on data and maintains reports/time sheets/cost records.
• Recommends personnel actions, promotions, transfers, and disciplinary measures; rates employees per the Employee Performance Management System.
• Coordinates placement of traffic control devices and maintains work zones per SCDOT manuals; prepares budget data and requisitions for supplies/equipment/contract work.
• Monitors safety, conducts job hazard analyses, and leads safety meetings; ensures CDL pre-trip inspections are completed; may work extended hours in emergencies.

Job Responsibilities

Serves as Specialty Crew Foreman for Bamberg Bridge Maintenance Unit. Directs crews in various construction, repair, and preservation activities of roads and bridges within the district to include bridge deck, superstructure, and substructure installation and repair. These activities occur in and around bodies of water (in emergency situations, swimming may be necessary). Inputs data and runs reports in the maintenance data management system for crews and performs QA/QC checks on the data to ensure accuracy of the reports. Maintains daily, weekly, and monthly reports, time sheets, and cost records; recommends personnel actions including promotions, transfers and disciplinary measures; rates employees yearly according to the Employee Performance Management System. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to ward motorists. Assists in the compilation of data and preparation of the annual budget. Recommends and/or approves requisitions for supplies, equipment, and contract work necessary for various maintenance activities. Prepares maintenance reports detailing labor, material, and equipment cost of repairs. Completes job hazard analysis forms, mitigates risks, and conducts safety meeting prior to the commencement of work activities to inform the crew of the hazards associated with the work to be performed. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Ensures employees within the crew(s) complete all CDL pre-trip inspections prior to operating CDL vehicles. Conducts meetings and training sessions for employees. Manages assigned crew(s) in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12- hours shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Four (4) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
