South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking an equipment operator to support bridge construction, repair and maintenance across the state highway system. Responsibilities include operating backhoes, excavators and other heavy machinery, performing skilled concrete work and drainage repairs, and coordinating traffic control for work zones.

Role requires one year of related experience, plus a valid driver's license and Class A CDL within six months.

• Safely uses light- to heavy-duty tools (circular saws, drills, band saws, chainsaws, grinders, jackhammers, torches).
• Completes daily vehicle/equipment inspections and reports repairs.
• Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to establish maintenance work zones per the manual.
• Assists with material movement and equipment operation during maintenance.
• May work extended hours or 12-hour shifts and in adverse weather conditions.

Job Responsibilities

Operates heavy-duty equipment in support of bridge construction, repair, and cleaning activities on the state highway system, including backhoes, lowboy truck tractors, and excavators. Performs skilled manual labor associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of bridges, including grading, setting forms, pouring and finishing concrete, and repairing and cleaning drainage structures. Performs and assists with training in skilled manual labor activities. Safely operates light- to heavy-duty tools, including circular saws, drills, band saws, chainsaws, grinders, jackhammers, and torches, in support of road and bridge construction, repair, and preservation. Completes daily vehicle checklists and equipment inspections accurately and timely. Inspects and operates motorized vehicles and equipment and reports necessary repairs to the supervisor. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to establish maintenance work zones in accordance with the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide and provide appropriate warning to motorists. Operates equipment used to support maintenance activities and the movement of materials and supplies, including concrete mixers, dump trucks, forklifts, snow plows, spreaders, sweepers, tractors with brooms, and rollers. Assists during emergency and inclement weather operations, including the operation of medium or heavy-duty equipment. May be required to work extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
