Job description

Supervises the Hot Crew of skilled and semi-skilled highway maintenance workers in a variety of activities to maintain and preserve State maintained roads in a county or district. Maintain weekly and monthly reports, time sheets, and work records. Implements SCDOT management policies and initiatives.

Supervises staff to include preparing performance planning and evaluation documents and related personnel paperwork. Coaches, counsels, and trains employees. Establishes and monitors work processes. Implements management policies and initiatives and promotes teamwork within the organization.

Investigates work requests and schedules necessary work. Inputs work accomplishments into Highway Maintenance Management Systems (HMMS). Performs or assists in all additional requests or tasks assigned by direct supervisor(s) within the State Chain of Command. This includes, but is not limited to, Hurricane/Snow and Ice Plans, Customer Services, On-Call, Traffic Control, Spill Response and Emergency Work or Support.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Three and one-half (3.5) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
