Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a maintenance worker to operate patching equipment, rollers, and transport materials for road and bridge repairs. You will perform base and pavement work and assist in related heavy equipment tasks on varied sites.

The role requires outdoor work in all weather, adherence to safety rules, and flexibility for overtime during hazardous weather or emergencies. Physical tasks and CDL-related responsibilities are involved.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operate injection patcher, trailer mounted, for paving and patching repairs to base and pavement.
• Operate a large roller to compact and solidify fill material.
• Haul materials with dump trucks or flatbed trucks (asphalt, limestone, dirt, cement, pipes, debris).
• Perform traffic control flagging to protect workers and the public.
• Assist with operations of skid steer and backhoe as needed.
• Work in emergencies and hazardous weather conditions.

At Lexington Maintenance, operates injection patcher, trailer mounted, which is used for paving, patching repairs to base and pavement on roads, driveways, crossovers, turn lanes, parking areas and bridge approaches. Operates a large roller to compact and solidify fill material. Operates dump trucks or flatbed truck to haul materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe or other construction materials or debris. Preventive maintenace program will be followed as required. Performs duties using manual labor in maintenance tasks such as clearing right-of-ways, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, repairs to bridges, paving driveways or laying sideline/crossline pipe. Performs traffic control flagging operations to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment. Operates skid steer when necessary in all maintenance operations. Assists in operating a backhoe in cleaning ditches and/or placing pipe. Operates medium to heavy equipment during emergencies and/or hazardous weather.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.

Additional Comments

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
