Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a skilled highway maintenance worker to perform a wide range of tasks, operating medium equipment such as tandem dump trucks, rollers, and skid steers, and assisting patching crews on roadways and bridges.

Responsibilities include placing traffic control devices, flagging in work zones, inspecting and maintaining equipment, and assisting in emergency or inclement weather operations.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Patches roadway surfaces and patches driveways; installs pipes and performs resurfacing projects.
• Operates medium equipment such as tandem dump trucks, large rollers (>4 tons), aggregate spreaders, skid steers.
• Places traffic control devices and flags traffic in work zones to protect workers and the public.
• Performs daily preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; inspects and services vehicles.
• Assists other maintenance crews and participates in emergency or inclement weather operations.

Job description

In conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates medium equipment such as tandem dump truck, large roller (>4 tons), aggregate spreader, skid steer, etc. Performs a variety of tasks for the Patching Crew related to maintenance operations, including, but not limited to, patching roadway surfaces, installing and paving driveways, installing pipe, resurfacing projects with hot plant mix, cold plant mix, and bituminous asphalt surfacing, correcting low shoulder conditions, etc. Assists other maintenance crews, as needed, with other maintenance operations to complete routine maintenance work and maintenance plans. Minimum business plan requirements include inspecting all State roads within Edgefield County twice a year for pavement deficiencies, correcting potholes and low shoulder conditions, installing driveways, and addressing external work requests within 30 days. Places traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Flags traffic in work zones during roadway repair and patching operations to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public, and equipment. Flags traffic using sign board and/or hand-held flags. Operates small engine equipment such as chain saws, tamps, pavement breakers, and weed eaters as needed. Performs duties using manual labor in maintenance operations as needed. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment and vehicles to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present to get maximum utilization of equipment. Conducts pre-trip and safety inspections on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Assists in tracking and reporting daily work performed to supervisors, including specific accomplishments, work locations, equipment utilization, and quantity of materials used. Assists in emergency, on‑call, or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended 12‑hour shifts. Operates both anti‑icing and removal equipment (snow plows and sand and salt spreaders) during snow and ice response on highways and bridges. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
