Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking personnel to operate herbicide application equipment and trucks along District 6 roads and bridges. You will enter data into the Highway Maintenance Management System, perform quality checks, and participate in safety briefings before work.

CDL pre-trip inspections and routine maintenance are required aspects of the role. Applicants must have at least one year of related experience or an approved equivalence and obtain a Class A CDL

Qualifications

• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Assist in safety meetings and in completing job hazard analysis forms.
• Set up traffic control devices to warn motorists and follow the Work Zone Traffic Control Manual.
• Perform CDL pre-trip inspections and participate in training and data gathering for reports and records.
• Assist in emergencies removing fallen trees, snow, or ice and in routine maintenance.

Job Responsibilities

Operates herbicide application equipment and herbicide truck in accordance to the Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management (IRVM) plan, performing herbicide activities along roads and bridges within District 6. Provides data to the Herbicide Crew Leader or Foreman to be entered in the Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS) for the operation of equipment. Performs Quality Control checks on the data to ensure accuracy of the reports. Assists in completing job hazard analysis forms to mitigate risks and participates in safety meetings prior to the commencement of work activities informing the crew of the hazards associated with the work to be performed. Places traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Completes all CDL pre-trip inspections prior to operating CDL vehicles. Participates in assigned training for employees. Assists in gathering data for daily, weekly, and monthly reports, time sheets, and cost records. Performs routine and preventive maintenance activities. Assists in emergencies removing fallen trees, snow, ice from highways and bridges caused by hazardous weather. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
