Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a general highway maintenance worker to perform bridge repair and related tasks on state routes. You will operate heavy equipment such as backhoes and excavators and assist in maintaining roads and bridges.

You must have at least 1 year of related experience, hold a valid driver's license, and obtain a Class A CDL within six months. Expect varying shifts, including potential 12-hour periods, and work in outdoor, traffic-adjacent

Job description

Performs general highway maintenance worker functions and operates heavy equipment including, but not limited to, backhoe, mini excavator, and lowboy truck tractor and trailer in order to repair bridge deficiencies. Performs skilled manual labor and operates medium equipment such as a skid steer and tandem dump truck in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of bridges on the state highway system. Examples include grading, mowing, sweeping, setting forms, pouring/finishing concrete, cutting, painting, installing and placing steel sections, etc. Performs a variety of bridge maintenance activities using tools and equipment such as complex saws, hoists, power tools, measuring devices, and welders. Places traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
