Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking personnel to operate small equipment and assist with maintenance across roadways. This role involves flagging, traffic control, and performing pavement repairs as well as drainage and sign tasks.

Applicants must have a valid license and are expected to obtain a Class A CDL within six months of placement. The job may require extended hours or 12-hour shifts in adverse weather or emergencies.

• Perform construction, repair, and preservation of asphalt and concrete pavements using proper techniques.
• Assist with installation and repair of catch basins, drainage structures, drainage pipes, signs, and pavement markings.
• Pick up litter, debris, and dead animals; assist in emergency and inclement weather operations; may require extended hours or 12-hour shifts.

Job description

Operates small equipment such as a dump truck, brush chipper, concrete mixer, roller, snow plow, spreader, powered tools, and hand tools to perform a variety of maintenance activities. Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Performs construction, repair, and preservation to asphalt and concrete pavements using proper repair techniques. This work involves the use of hand or pneumatic-powered tools and compaction equipment. Performs manual labor to assist with the installation and repair of catch basins and other drainage structures and the placement of drainage pipes. Assists with the installation and repair of traffic signs, pavement markings, and safety device. Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
