Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a general highway maintenance worker to operate dump trucks, rollers, concrete mixers, and related equipment for highway upkeep. You will perform manual tasks, assist in traffic control, and support emergency operations, including after-hours on-call duties.

This role requires a valid driver's license and, within six months, attainment of a Class A CDL.

Job description

Operates small motorized equipment on the Hot Crew, such as, but not limited to, dump trucks, rollers < 4 tons, concrete mixers, and tractor with mowers in the maintenance of highways. Performs duties using manual labor, in such maintenance tasks as clearing of right‑of‑way cleaning drainage/ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, paving driveways, laying side line/cross line pipe, grading and setting forms, laying bricks/blocks, repairing and building, pouring/finishing concrete/cement for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveway, catch basins, etc. Performs traffic controls operations for work zones, to include flagging traffic for the safety of the crew and the public, during various phases of roadway maintenance. Operates electric and gas powered equipment and hand tools such as chainsaws, weed eaters, drills, jack wrenches, air compressors, shovel rakes, and tamps in the maintenance of highways. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations and being on call for after hour emergencies. May be required to work extended hours and/or 12 hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
