Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking an Equipment Operator to perform a range of road maintenance tasks across counties. You will operate tractors with mowers, dump trucks, and power tools, and participate in weather-related activities and emergencies.

Applicant must obtain a Class A CDL within six months of placement; physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs; able to work outside hours as needed. The position is full-time and on-site with a focus on safety and reliability.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains equipment (tractor with mower, brush chipper, snow plow) in road maintenance.

• Flags traffic, protects workers and public; available for emergencies and adverse weather duties; on-call may be required.
• Assists in other related duties as assigned.

Job Responsibilities

Operates and maintains small equipment such as tractor with mower, brush chipper and snow plow used in various phases of road maintenance. Performs duties using manual labor, in such maintenance duties as clearing of the right-of ways, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, repairs to bridges, paving driveways and laying sideline/cross line pipe. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, motoring public and equipment. Operates 5 yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools including chainsaws and pole saws and uses hand tools in various phases of roadway maintenance. Assists in emergencies and inclement weather operations which may include working hours outside of normal work schedule. When crew is in an "on-call" status, employee is available 24 hours a day. Performs other related duties as assigned.

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
