Job summary

State of South Carolina in Allendale, SC is seeking a Laborer for roadway and right‑of‑way maintenance. Tasks include signage, pavement markings, drainage work, litter removal, vegetation management, bridge upkeep, and patching/paving.

The role requires operating a small equipment and a standard dump truck, flagging traffic, and performing pre‑trip inspections. A valid driver’s license is required, with Class A CDL to be obtained within six months.

Qualifications

• No minimum training or experience required; CDL is required within six months.
• Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license; Class A CDL within six months.
• Physical demands include lifting up to 50 lbs and working outdoors in all weather.

Responsibilities

• Maintain roadways and right-of-way: signage, pavement markings, driveway work, drainage, litter removal, vegetation management, bridge maintenance, and patching/paving.
• Operate small equipment and a standard dump truck to haul materials to and from job sites.
• Flag traffic during maintenance activities and conduct pre-trip inspections of equipment and vehicles.
• Perform duties in snow/ice and other inclement weather; respond to after‑hours emergencies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job description

Job Responsibilities

Performs manual labor during roadway and right of way maintenance activities. Areas of work may include, but are not limited to signage and pavement markings, driveway installation and maintenance, construction of drainage appurtenances, maintenance of drainage appurtenances, litter/debris removal, vegetation management, bridge maintenance and patching/paving. Operates small equipment and standard dump truck while hauling materials and supplies to and from job sites. Flags traffic during various maintenance activities. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the department's most current rules, policies and procedures for fleet safety. Performs duties during snow/ice and other inclement weather events. Performs on-call services for after-hour emergencies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
