The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking four Highway Maintenance Worker Leads to serve as members of the South Central Region’s (SCR) Maintenance & Operations team. Under the direction and supervision of the Highway Maintenance Supervisors and Maintenance Superintendents, these positions will lead entry and journey level Highway Maintenance Workers and perform highway, roadside, infrastructure, and right-of-way maintenance work along state routes and surrounding areas. These experienced technicians will lead by example and display a strong ability to work under pressure in demanding conditions and maintain a safe and clean work environment. In these roles, you must be dedicated to safety while coordinating and performing daily work activities which include heavy equipment operations, providing roadway maintenance for sub-sections of highways, and performing snow and ice removal functions. Our top candidates must have temperament to interact with the public daily and be able to maintain a positive working relationship with supervisor, coworkers, and customers. These positions support the mission of the WSDOT by providing safe summer and winter roads for the efficient movement of commerce and the traveling public.

What to Expect

These positions perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. A typical schedule is Monday through Thursday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days. Days, nights, weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. Rotational night shift is required.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these roles, theHighway Maintenance Worker Leads will:

  • Supervise winter crews that perform snow and ice removal.
  • Assist with avalanche closures and the removal of avalanches.
  • Operate a wide variety of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), heavy equipment, and power and non-power tools.
  • Assist with performing, prioritizing, planning, scheduling, and budgeting of maintenance activities.
  • Inspect highways for work needs and safety issues.
  • Maintain highway features such as, but not limited to drainage structures, road signs, fences, guideposts, and guardrail.
  • Follow traffic control plans, place signs, cones, barricades, and other traffic control devices.
  • Assist with planning and leading safety meetings.
  • Utilize personal computer and tablet to maintain accurate records and reports for personnel, equipment, inventory, and materials.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Two (2) years of highway maintenance or closely related experience such as roadway construction.
  • A Class A CDL with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction.
  • A valid CDL medical card.
  • Ability to supervise others operating snow and ice removal equipment in adverse weather conditions during day and nighttime hours and to assist with the management of the snow and ice program.
  • A valid Traffic Control/Flagger Card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • A valid First Aid Certification, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of heavy equipment used for road maintenance.
  • Skills to communicate effectively with diverse groups utilizing oral, written, and electronic communication methods.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities.
  • Skills to enter data on computer as this position is required to capture work completion and associated labor tracking via a PC or iPad.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.


Important Notes

  • These positions are not eligible for remote work.
  • This recruitment will be used to fill four (4) permanent HMW3 vacancies in SCR Area 1, for the day and night shifts. There are two positions in each of the following locations: Ellensburg and Snoqualmie Pass (Hyak).
  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • Travel is regularly required within the maintenance area to patrol, inspect, and conduct work activities, or to attend meetings and trainings.
  • These positions may be required to work the following schedules:
    • Ellensburg: 6am to 4:30pm (summer), 5am to 3:30pm (winter), or 5pm to 3:30am (nights)
    • Hyak: 6am to 4:30pm (summer/winter), 5pm to 3:30 am (summer nights) or 6pm to 4:30am (winter nights)
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
