The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking to fill a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 position in Vancouver, WA., as a full time nighttime position, with night shift premium pay and Designated Corridor pay. This position will operate a wide variety of highway equipment and tools, this position is responsible for maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. This position performs a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3. This position is critical in fostering a respectful, and healthy work environment with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion.

What to Expect

These positions perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time; HMW2 may work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water. Work may also include traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. A typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour nights. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, theHighway Maintenance Worker will:

  • Perform asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair; apply concrete, asphalt and synthetic materials.
  • Perform drainage maintenance; sign maintenance and repair; guardrail, fence and impact attenuator installation and repair.
  • Perform tree removal and vegetation management.
  • Track, document and report daily work activities, account for inventory and inventories highway section.
  • Perform snow and ice control, including application of anti-icing compounds to road surface with truck mounted equipment, loading trucks, hauling materials such as sand, gravel and other items, and maintaining stockpile sites.
  • Design and set up traffic control; full road or bridge closures; perform traffic control; and conduct moving and stational traffic control operations.
  • Operate Class A, B and C highway equipment as designated on the approved Department of Transportation Equipment List (TEF) for highway maintenance.
  • Act as a first responder at accident scenes, spills, or other emergency situations.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation or related experience such as farming, timber operations, or construction.
  • A valid driver’s license with the ability to legally operate vehicles in Washington State.
  • Experience in being committed to safety including proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • A Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement without air brake restrictions with a current medical examiner’s certificate to be obtained within 12 months of hire.
  • A valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or obtaining Flagger Certification within 12 months.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day/7 day a week.
  • Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to respond to the assigned duty station with 45 minutes of an after-hours callout.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.
  • Two (2) years as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or comparable work experience.
  • One (1) year of snow removal and anti-icing operations with plow trucks.
  • Knowledge of the surrounding area.
  • Well-rounded experience in multiple disciplines.
  • Consistent work history
