The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 position inPort Orchard, WA. The selected candidate will assist with the area’s maintenance and repair of the state highways and highway structures to ensure the traveling public's safety. Some of the work includes traffic control, repair and installation of guardrail and jersey barrier, as well as mowing and ditching operations. Working in the maintenance area requires responsible, safety-minded individuals to perform a variety of skilled labor tasks and operate highway equipment and tools. This opportunity is perfect for someone who enjoys working with their hands, knowing their work is done on roadways and in a variety of weather conditions.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:
- Perform day-to-day highway maintenance operations.
- Operate Class A, B and C highway equipment as designated on the approved Department of Transportation Equipment List (TEF) for highway maintenance.
- Perform asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair; apply concrete, asphalt, and synthetic materials.
- Perform drainage maintenance to include catch basins, sedimentation facilities, and ditches.
- Perform erosion and slide repair.
- Perform sign maintenance and repair.
- Perform guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair.
- Perform danger tree removal; vegetation management, including pesticide application; establish, maintain, and repair landscaped areas, including planting and remediating sites.
- Transport heavy equipment and materials between work sites.
- Remove litter on state right-of-way; remove dead animals and debris from roadways.
- Track, document, and report daily work activities into computerized systems (e.g., Highway Activity Tracking System (HATS), Work Zone Data base (WZDB), Traffic Sign Management System (TSMS, etc.); review computerized records to ensure accuracy.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 level, the following are required:
- One (1) year of experience performing maintenance activities in a related field of work, such as highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, trucking, or heavy equipment experience.
- Possession of an unrestricted valid driver’s license to legally operate vehicles in Washington State.
To be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 level, the following are required:
- Two (2) years of highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, or heavy equipment experience.
OR
- One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or equivalent.
AND
- Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement to legally operate vehicles in Washington State; or obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.
- Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- Possession of Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License; or obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.
The following are required at both levels:
- Ability to work next to high-volume, high-speed traffic and ability to perform duties at elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water
- The ability to transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- High school graduation, or possession of a GED certificate, or equivalent.
- Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement to legally operate vehicles in Washington State.

- This is an in-training position that offers a career path, hands-on learning, and mentorship. This position allows you to progress upward through the Highway Maintenance Worker series and achieve the goal class of a Highway Maintenance Worker 2. Candidates will be considered for a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or Highway Maintenance Worker 2, depending on their qualifications.
Annual salary levels for each position are:
Highway Maintenance Worker 1: $46,920 - $56,880Highway Maintenance Worker 2: $52,920 - $64,440- Obtaining your Commercial Driver’s License is made easier with WSDOT! We provide on the job training and partial financial assistance for positions requiring CDLs.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicableCollective Bargaining Agreements.
