Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) seeks a skilled Highway Maintenance Worker 2 in Colville, WA. You will be part of a regional maintenance crew, performing hands-on roadway upkeep to keep highways safe and reliable for Washington’s people and commerce.

The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a skilled Highway Maintenance Worker 2 in beautiful Colville, WA. As a Highway Maintenance Worker 2, you’ll be an essential member of our regional maintenance team, keeping highways and structures safe, reliable, and ready for the people and commerce that depend on them every day. Under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, you’ll operate a wide range of highway equipment and tools while performing skilled maintenance and repair work across the transportation system.

From maintaining roadways and highway structures to responding to changing conditions and supporting your crew, you’ll have the opportunity to apply your skills in a hands‑on environment where your work has a direct and visible impact. You may also have the opportunity to step into a leadership role and lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3. What to Expect

Work is generally performed Monday–Thursday on four 10-hour shifts; however, weekends, holidays, night work, and extended hours may be required for emergency response and non-scheduled callouts. The position requires the ability to report to the duty station within 45 minutes, respond in all weather conditions, and participate in rotational night, standby, and call-back assignments.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker will:

• Perform asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair; apply concrete, asphalt and synthetic materials.
• Perform drainage maintenance; sign maintenance and repair; guardrail, fence and impact attenuator installation and repair.
• Perform tree removal and vegetation management.
• Perform snow and ice control, including application of anti-icing compounds to road surface with truck mounted equipment, loading trucks, hauling materials such as sand, gravel and other items, and maintaining stockpile sites.
• Design and set up traffic control; full road or bridge closures; perform traffic control; and conduct moving and stational traffic control operations.
• Track, document and report daily work activities, account for inventory and inventories highway section.
• Operate Class A, B and C highway equipment as designated on the approved Department of Transportation Equipment List (TEF) for highway maintenance.
• Act as a first responder at accident scenes, spills, or other emergency situations.
• Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

• Highway Maintenance: Ability to perform skilled roadway maintenance and repair activities, including maintaining roadways, drainage systems, roadside features, and highway structures to support safe and reliable transportation operations. Related experience in logging, farming, mining, road construction, excavation, or similar hands‑on environments may provide applicable transferable skills.
• Equipment Operation: Ability to safely operate, inspect, and perform routine maintenance on a variety of highway maintenance equipment, including trucks, loaders, plows, and other heavy or powered equipment. Ability to learn and safely operate unfamiliar equipment used in roadway maintenance operations.
• Safety & Risk Awareness: Ability to identify and respond to hazards associated with roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, traffic, weather, and changing work conditions while following established safety procedures and practices.
• Traffic Control: Ability to work safely within or around active traffic and follow established traffic control procedures to protect workers, equipment, and the traveling public.
• Teamwork & Leadership: Ability to work effectively as part of a maintenance crew, communicate with coworkers and supervisors, and step into a lead role when needed to support safe and effective completion of maintenance activities.
• Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
• Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.

The following qualifications are also required:

• A valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL endorsement N (Air Brake restriction removed), within twelve (12) months of hire.
• A valid CDL medical card.
• A valid Washington State Flagging Card, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
• A valid First Aid Certification, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
• Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand‑by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
• Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
• Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

• Highway Maintenance & Heavy Equipment Operations: Knowledge of and ability to perform roadway maintenance, bridge maintenance and construction, and related highway maintenance activities. Ability to safely operate and work around heavy equipment and tools used in maintenance and construction operations.

Important Notes

• This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
• This position is not eligible for remote work.
• Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions and often near moving traffic and heavy equipment, requiring heightened situational awareness and strict adherence to safety practices. The role involves physically demanding tasks, including deploying traffic control devices, flagging, and operating maintenance vehicles and equipment, with extended periods of standing and walking. Employees must wear appropriate PPE at all times.
