Responsibilities

• Perform janitorial services in rest area facilities: clean, disinfect, graffiti removal, restock supplies, litter pickup, sweep walkways and parking areas.
• Daily chlorination and water meter reading; collect public drinking water samples and submit for testing.
• Clean, inspect, and maintain recreational vehicle dump stations.
• Inspect rest area for vandalism, abandoned vehicles, and unauthorized use.
• Landscaping and vegetation management: mowing, pruning, fertilizing, weeding.
• Winter maintenance: de-icing, shovels, and snow removal equipment for public areas.
• Operate power tools and hand tools; operate class C equipment for maintenance.
• Perform minor building repairs to plumbing, electrical, lighting, and HVAC components.
• Provide travelers with accurate, courteous, and timely assistance.
• Contribute to safety culture: participate in monthly meetings, prepare PASP, and conduct monthly Safety Field Reviews using SIIRS.

The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a motivated Highway Maintenance Worker 1 to provide year-round maintenance and operational support at the Northwest Region Area 4 rest areas. Under the direction of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor, this rest area attendant will maintain clean and operational facilities that provide the traveling public with a safe place to rest and access necessary services. These services reduce driver fatigue and provide opportunities for private and commercial vehicles to stop for load and equipment inspections, helping reduce transportation risks and support the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce.

What to Expect

This position performs work that is physical in nature, primarily outdoors, and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. HMW1s may work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water. Work may also include traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. A typical schedule is 40-hours per week for four (4) 10-hour shifts. Nights, weekends, and holidays may also be required to respond to emergency situations.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

• Perform janitorial services within rest area facilities: clean, scrub, and disinfect; remove graffiti; maintain and refill rest area supplies; pick up litter and dispose of trash; and sweep and clean walkways, parking areas, and picnic areas.
• Perform daily chlorination and water meter reading; obtain public drinking water samples from well and submit to the assigned county testing site.
• Clean, inspect, and maintain recreational vehicle dump stations.
• Inspect assigned rest area for vandalism, abandoned vehicles, and unauthorized use.
• Perform landscaping and vegetation management, including planting and remediating sites, pruning, brushing, weeding, mowing, and applying fertilizer.
• Maintain public access areas, entries, and walkways during winter with de-icing agents, shovels, and snow removal equipment.
• Operate power tools and hand tool; operate class C equipment for maintenance operations.
• Perform minor building and equipment repairs of plumbing, electrical, lighting, and HVAC components to maintain facility functionality.
• Provide travelers with accurate, courteous, and timely assistance and information.
• Contribute to a strong culture of safety in the workplace: participate in monthly organizational meetings; prepare daily Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP); and conduct monthly Safety Field Reviews using SIIRS (Safety Inspection and Incident Reporting System).

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

The following qualifications are also required:

• A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
• Ability to obtain and maintain valid First Aid/CPR Certification after hire.
• Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call.
• Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays to respond to emergency call-backs/standby.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time and traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
• Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

• Landscaping & Grounds Maintenance:Experience performing landscaping activities such as mowing, pruning, and fertilizing.
• Building Maintenance & Repairs: Experience performing minor repair and maintenance of public buildings to include janitorial duties and plumbing/electrical systems.
• Cleaning Agents & Mixing:Knowledge of a variety of cleaning agents and how to mix for effective cleaning.
• Technology & Software Proficiency:Experience utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Office to include Excel, Word, and Outlook; and tablets, such as an iPad.

• The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County in addition to the 10% Assignment Pay for this job classification.
