Job description

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Respond to emergency callouts within 1 hour during inclement weather, including snow and ice conditions.
  2. Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort, exposed to various weather conditions.
  3. Operate plows during winter operations and obtain necessary equipment certifications.
  4. Support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations within the Incident Command System.

Minimum Qualifications:

Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1:
  • Must be 18 years old.
  • Pass physical/medical examination and drug test.
  • Possess a Class D Driver License.
Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2:
  • Must be 18 years old.
  • Pass physical/medical examination and drug test.
  • Possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction.
  • Ability to operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment; failure to pass will result in termination.
Highway Maintenance Worker 1:
  • Completion of Trainee 2 or one year of relevant experience.
  • Experience in operating highway construction, maintenance equipment, or vehicles over 26,000 GVWR with air brakes.
  • Possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT endorsements.
  • Hold two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications and three specific certifications: heavy dump truck, single/double wing plowing, and front-end loader.
  • Within two weeks of employment, must complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification; failure results in termination.

Additional Notes:

  • All candidates must pass a pre-employment physical/medical examination and drug test.
  • Cannabis use is prohibited; testing during screening may disqualify candidates or lead to removal from employment.
  • Candidates with a valid CDL A or B and a current (less than 2 years old) CDL Medical Certificate may bypass the pre-employment physical, subject to specific criteria discussed at the interview.
