Duties and Responsibilities:
- Respond to emergency callouts within 1 hour during inclement weather, including snow and ice conditions.
- Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort, exposed to various weather conditions.
- Operate plows during winter operations and obtain necessary equipment certifications.
- Support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations within the Incident Command System.
Minimum Qualifications:
Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1:
- Must be 18 years old.
- Pass physical/medical examination and drug test.
- Possess a Class D Driver License.
Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2:
- Must be 18 years old.
- Pass physical/medical examination and drug test.
- Possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction.
- Ability to operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment; failure to pass will result in termination.
Highway Maintenance Worker 1:
- Completion of Trainee 2 or one year of relevant experience.
- Experience in operating highway construction, maintenance equipment, or vehicles over 26,000 GVWR with air brakes.
- Possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT endorsements.
- Hold two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications and three specific certifications: heavy dump truck, single/double wing plowing, and front-end loader.
- Within two weeks of employment, must complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification; failure results in termination.
Additional Notes:
- All candidates must pass a pre-employment physical/medical examination and drug test.
- Cannabis use is prohibited; testing during screening may disqualify candidates or lead to removal from employment.
- Candidates with a valid CDL A or B and a current (less than 2 years old) CDL Medical Certificate may bypass the pre-employment physical, subject to specific criteria discussed at the interview.
