Qualifications

Job description

POSITION TITLE : Highway Maintenance Worker

Agency : Hughes County

Location : Pierre, SD

Full-Time : Monday - Thursday, 6 : 30 a.m. - 5 : 00 p.m.

Salary : $23.75 minimum - higher based on certification and experience.

Hughes County seeks a passionate individual to join our team in making Hughes County one of the best places to live and work. This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment and performing general road maintenance. Road maintenance activities include blading, asphalt patching, and snow plowing.

Here is What You Will Do :

• Operates front-end loaders, motor grader, tandem dump trucks, distributor and sealant kettles to level bumps, holes, and surface deterioration in the roadway, using both hot and cold bituminous material. Patches potholes and edge failures in the roadway surface.
• Installs and maintains traffic control signing, pavement markings, delineators, and guardrails.
• Maintains equipment by performing critical service work.
• Operates tractor / trailer and tandem trucks, front-end loader, motor grader and rollers for patching gravel roadways to a smooth and level driving surface.
• Operates snowplows, reversible V-plows and one-way snow plows, sanders, front-loaders, and motor grader with wing to plow snow, remove snow and ice, and apply sand-chemical mixtures to ice and snow-covered roadways.
• Operates steel-face and rubber-tire rollers to pack gravel or asphalt road surfaces.
• Repairs and maintains bridges.
• Repairs and maintains culverts.
• Gravel and asphalt work includes placing gravel or asphalt, and maintaining roads.
• Spraying weeds in County Road ditches.
• Prepares and maintains written reports of daily activity.

What Will Make You Stand Out :

• Possession of a valid South Dakota Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes and tanker endorsement or ability to obtain in 60 days of hire.
• Possession of a valid South Dakota Driver's License.
• Background check and pre-employment drug screen before hire.
• Must possess Pesticide Applicator Certification or be willing to obtain upon hire.
• Ability to operate motor vehicles, trucks, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic controls or the construction, maintenance and repair of road ways and flood control channels.
• Experience in performing physically demanding work for long periods;
• Ability to sustain physical exertion and coordination in adverse conditions;
• Ability to establish and maintain safe, effective, and cooperative working relationships with others.
