GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Within the Department of Transportation (DOT), to perform highly skilled highway maintenance tasks in accordance with standard trade practices in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of highway drainage and other structures; to perform safety-sensitive functions as needed; to assist in a facilities maintenance program; and perform related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives work assignments from a superior, who provides instructions on work methods, equipment, materials, and schedules; work is subject to supervision and inspection for adherence to standards.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May occasionally direct and/or train others.
Responsibilities include constructing, maintaining, and repairing concrete foundations, building retaining walls, drainage basins, walks, and stairways; mixing and laying bricks, blocks, and stones; repairing concrete pipelines; building forms and setting reinforcing wire; waterproofing concrete; operating pneumatic and hydraulic tools; maintaining tools and equipment; estimating costs; and advising on material selection.
As a licensed commercial motor vehicle operator, responsible for ensuring safety at all times, including operating trucks with plow blades and spreaders for snow removal, assisting in traffic control, and performing emergency repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment.
Additional duties involve supporting the maintenance program through manual labor, operational adjustments, record-keeping, and working in various environmental conditions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND CAPACITIES: Thorough knowledge of masonry principles and practices; skills in using masonry tools and equipment; understanding safety measures; ability to work from plans and supervise others; estimating costs; operating heavy and specialized equipment; safe driving skills; and physical ability to perform manual tasks.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school and experience as a skilled mason and heavy equipment operator (>26,000 lbs GVW with airbrakes and manual transmission), or equivalent.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess and maintain a valid Rhode Island CDL Class B with airbrake and tanker endorsements; comply with USDOT and State drug and alcohol testing regulations; be physically qualified as evidenced by a physician's certificate. Experience in winter/emergency operations and general construction is preferred.
