Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 12 months of hire.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. We are seeking a Highway Maintenance Specialist for the Maintenance Program located in Elk Mountain, Wyoming. The role involves leading a team and performing various maintenance duties to ensure transportation safety and efficiency.

Elk Mountain is a small town in Carbon County, known for outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, skiing, and more. Wyoming has no income tax.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Operate and train others to operate complex machinery for maintenance
  • Lead daily maintenance tasks and provide work direction
  • Assist with tracking inventory, materials, labor, and equipment
  • Advise on repair procedures and safety standards
  • Serve as technical resource and ensure safety and quality compliance
  • Operate heavy equipment for snow removal and other maintenance
  • Oversee roadway rehabilitation and traffic control operations
  • Complete required state and federal training for certifications
  • Utilize computers for training, evaluations, and technology updates

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Highway maintenance operations
  • Computer systems and databases
  • State highway standards and safety procedures
  • Equipment maintenance and mechanical diagnosis
  • Hazardous materials response
  • Use of personal protective equipment
  • Operation of trucks, loaders, tractors, and heavy equipment
  • Safety protocols, First Aid, CPR, OSHA standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience: 2-4 years in Highway Maintenance/Construction with knowledge at Highway Maintenance Technician level, or

Certificates & Licenses: Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 12 months of hire

OR

Associate's Degree in Engineering or related field, with 0-2 years experience and ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 12 months


PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Use of manual and powered tools
  • Operation of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Exposure to hazardous materials
  • Ability to lift/carry 50 pounds
  • Operate equipment for long periods
  • Work in adverse weather conditions
  • Walk on uneven ground, work around traffic and heavy machinery

NOTES:
  • FLSA: Non-Exempt
  • State housing may be available
  • Candidates must pass motor vehicle record checks, drug screening, and physical exams
  • Must be available for emergency calls, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Report to shop within 30 minutes of call
  • Occasional overnight travel required
  • Water certification and other training may be required
