Job summary

The State of Indiana, via INDOT, invites applications for a Highway Maintenance Laborer at the South Bend Unit. The role supports Indiana highways through cleaning, pothole filling, drainage upkeep, and winter operations, with overtime for emergencies.

Normal schedule is Monday–Friday with mandatory overtime in winter. CDL candidates may qualify for additional pay depending on endorsements and CDL status. Training and safety are emphasized throughout.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid Class A or Class B CDL or obtain one within 90 days.
• Pass and submit to a drug test as a condition of employment.
• Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods.
• Must endure exposure to inclement weather.
• Ability to operate specialty traffic equipment (e.g. bucket trucks, paint equipment).
• Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Maintain highways and rights-of-way and perform basic maintenance.
• Assist with traffic control, especially during emergencies and road closures.
• Perform winter operations including snow and ice removal.
• Move and load supplies; perform routine equipment maintenance.
• Conduct regular inspections and basic pre-trip checks.
• Maintain inventory and operate traffic signs or related equipment where assigned.
