Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Highway Engineering Intern to be based in Pittsburgh, PA. This internship begins in Spring/Summer 2027 and offers hands-on experience on transportation projects in the Greater Pennsylvania Area.

You will build analytic and design skills, create designs, perform calculations, and draft construction plans under the supervision of a licensed engineer. As an intern, you will join a team to support roadway, structures, and traffic engineering efforts, develop CAD production

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field with at least 1 year of study completed.
  • Recent graduates pursuing a Master's degree are eligible to apply.
  • Interest in pursuing an advanced degree after the internship.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to the roadway, structures, and traffic engineering groups on highway design projects.
  • Assist design staff on engineering calculations, quantity calculations, cost estimates, construction plans, and supporting materials.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based, collaborative environment.

Job Description

This position is expected to begin in Spring/Summer 2027.

Interns are assigned duties that will provide a broad, well‑rounded learning experience within their field of study. As an Engineering Intern, you will gain experience working as part of a team on medium to large scale transportation projects in the Greater Pennsylvania Area. You will build analytic and design skills, create designs, perform calculations, and draft construction plans under the supervision of an experienced engineer.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide support to the roadway, structures, and traffic engineering groups on highway design projects.
  • The intern will work under the direction of engineers to support design staff on engineering calculations, quantity calculations, cost estimates, construction plans, and supporting materials.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team‑based, collaborative environment.
  • Computer‑Aided Design Production
  • Candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field and must have completed at least 1 year of study. Candidates who have recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with the Master’s degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, and/or AutoCAD familiarity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate effective time management, task prioritization, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License preferred to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices when public transportation is not available.

  • Relocation assistance is not offered position.
  • Sponsorship for U.S. employment authorization is not available in the future for this position.
  • This position requires a hybrid work schedule which includes in office work in Pittsburgh, PA. The selected candidate must be available to work in Pittsburgh, PA on a scheduled basis.
