Job summary

HDR, Inc. in Cincinnati is seeking a Highway Engineer to join a key highway design team. You will prepare roadway designs, coordinate with clients and subconsultants, and help manage projects from scope through delivery.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field.
  • Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board (PE).
  • Hands-on experience with highways and roads CAD tools (OpenRoads/OpenRoads Designer, Civil3D, Bentley).
  • 5 years of transportation engineering design; Ohio DOT and Design-Build experience a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Work as a key member of a highway design team for projects of varying size.
  • Prepare or oversee roadway/highway design work to local/AASHTO standards.
  • Assist in managing projects including scopes, budgets, and schedules.
  • Manage communication with design teams and clients; mentor junior staff.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

In the role of Highway Engineer, we'll count on you to:

  • Work as a key member of a highway/roadway design team for moderate to large projects, and to work independently on smaller projects.
  • Prepare or oversee the following roadway/highway design work using local or AASHTO standards: horizontal and vertical alignments, roadway sections, intersection layouts and sight distance determinations, interchange layouts, right-of-way plans.
  • Assist in the management of larger projects or manage smaller projects including preparation of scopes, budgets, and schedules.
  • Manage the following work elements: day-to-day communication (verbal and written) with the design team and client, support and advise junior engineers and technical staff, write reports and technical memos, coordinate with subconsultants, keep project on schedule and within budget, and keep client satisfied.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BSCE or related field.
  • 5 years of transportation engineering design experience required.
  • Experience working on Ohio DOT projects.
  • Experience working on Design-Build projects a plus.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience in all aspects of roadway engineering design
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Hands-on experience with Highways and Roads CAD engineering software such as Bentley ConceptStation and Open Roads Designer and/or Autodesk Infraworks and Civil3d
  • MS Office knowledge
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Experience should include urban and rural highway interchanges, intersection design, traffic management, transportation planning, site planning, preparation of concept alignments, geometrical layout and CAD base alignment plans
