Job summary

HDR is seeking a Highway Engineer to join a collaborative, employee-owned team focused on delivering complex roadway designs. The role involves leading design work for moderate to large projects, or managing smaller efforts, while coordinating with clients and subconsultants to keep projects on schedule and within budget.

Ideal candidates hold a PE license and a BSCE or related field, with 5+ years of transportation engineering experience and proficiency in Bentley/Autodesk roadway CAD tools.

Qualifications

  • Experience in roadway engineering design across all phases.
  • Professional Engineer license recognized by local licensing board (PE or P.Eng).
  • Hands-on CAD experience with highways tools: Bentley ConceptStation, OpenRoads Designer, Autodesk InfraWorks, Civil 3D.
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Strong communication and organization skills.
  • Experience including urban/rural interchanges, traffic management, transportation planning, site planning, and CAD base alignment plans.
  • Commitment to employee-owned culture.

Responsibilities

  • Work as a key member of a highway/roadway design team for moderate to large projects or independently on small projects.
  • Prepare or supervise roadway design using local or AASHTO standards including alignments, sight distances, layouts, and right-of-way plans.
  • Assist in managing projects including scopes, budgets, and schedules.
  • Coordinate with design teams, clients, subconsultants; produce reports and memos; keep projects on schedule and budget.

In the role of Highway Engineer, we'll count on you to:

  • Work as a key member of a highway/roadway design team for moderate to large projects, and to work independently on smaller projects.
  • Prepare or oversee the following roadway/highway design work using local or AASHTO standards: horizontal and vertical alignments, roadway sections, intersection layouts and sight distance determinations, interchange layouts, right-of-way plans.
  • Assist in the management of larger projects or manage smaller projects including preparation of scopes, budgets, and schedules.
  • Manage the following work elements: day-to-day communication (verbal and written) with the design team and client, support and advise junior engineers and technical staff, write reports and technical memos, coordinate with subconsultants, keep project on schedule and within budget, and keep client satisfied.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BSCE or related field.
  • 5 years of transportation engineering design experience required.
  • Experience working on Ohio DOT projects.

Experience working on Design-Build projects a plus.

Required Qualifications
  • Previous experience in all aspects of roadway engineering design

Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.

  • Hands-on experience with Highways and Roads CAD engineering software such as Bentley ConceptStation and Open Roads Designer and/or Autodesk Infraworks and Civil3d
  • MS Office knowledge
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Experience should include urban and rural highway interchanges, intersection design, traffic management, transportation planning, site planning, preparation of concept alignments, geometrical layout and CAD base alignment plans
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
