Job summary

St James School District R1 is seeking a Special Education Paraprofessional to support the Special Education team and work with students with special needs. Responsibilities include clerical tasks, assisting in small group and individual instruction, monitoring behavior, and providing personal care as needed.

Qualifications include 60 college credits or passing ParaPro assessments or completion of a substitute course.

• Experience working with children with special needs is desired.
• Must meet one of the certification/completion options listed in qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Perform clerical duties: preparing daily assignment sheets, tests, filing, typing, copying and grading student work.
• Assist in small group or individual instruction.
• Monitor student behavior and on-task time.
• Assist students with personal care on an individual basis.
• Participate in professional development to meet district/state requirements.
• Comply with federal, state, local, and Board of Education policies and regulations.
• Interact with students and staff and promote the school district positively.
• Serve as a liaison between regular education, parents, and special education teachers.
• Other duties as assigned by the special education teacher with approval of the Assistant Superintendent.

POSITION TITLE

SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAPROFESSIONAL

REPORTS TO: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER AND BUILDING PRINCIPALS

QUALIFICATIONS

• Obtain 60 college credit hours, or
• Have passed the ParaPro Assessment (before September 23, 2013) or
• Have passed the ParaProfessional Assessment through Pearson (September 23, 2013 through June 20, 2024) or
• Have passed the ParaPro Assessment through ETS (July 1, 2024 forward) or
• Completed the 20HR Substitute Certificate Course

Experience and training in working with children with special needs is desired.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

1. Perform clerical duties such as preparing daily assignment sheets, tests, filing, typing, copying and grading student work.
2. Assist in small group or individual instruction.
3. Assist the teacher by monitoring student behavior and on-task time.
4. Assist students with personal care as needed on an individual basis.
5. Participate in professional development activities as necessary to meet district and state requirements for in-service.
6. Comply with federal, state, local, and Board of Education policies and regulations.
7. Interacts with students/staff and promotes school district in positive manner.
8. Serve as a liaison between regular education, parents, and special education teachers.
9. Any other duties as assigned by the special education teacher with the approval of the Assistant Superintendent.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Employment is on an annual basis. This is an at will position. The Superintendent of Schools makes employment recommendations in April of each year for the next fiscal year. The final decision is made by the Board of Education. Salary is based on the Classified Salary Schedule adopted annually by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION

An annual evaluation is conducted by the supervising special education teacher each year using the evaluation method adopted by the Board of Education.
