Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW: High School Music Teacher (Full Time) – Deering High School, 25-26 SY
Portland Public Schools is looking for an experienced Music Teacher (emphasis on instrumental, band, and/or strings) to teach music electives to students at Deering High School, and to support the Musical Theatre course / production as the musical director. A successful candidate will be able to create an enjoyable learning environment to inspire young minds and help them grow in their appreciation of music. Courses taught by the Music Teacher may include the following based on the candidates’ strengths: Band, Orchestra, Musical Theater, and Introductory courses in Guitar, Piano, Ukulele, and Digital Music.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaching general styles of music and assessing student progress toward meeting standards
  • Differentiating music curriculum to meet the needs of the individual student and the diverse student body
  • Building relationships and mentoring students
  • Establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during class, group rehearsals, and music performances
  • Preparing students for school concerts, local performances, and other planned music experiences
  • Inspiring and motivating students to practice outside of class time and be involved in the local music scene; providing opportunities for student-driven music ensembles
  • Maintaining care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment to prevent loss or damage
