Job description

The American Dream School (ADS) is a dual-language (Spanish / English) 6-12 school in the Mott Haven area of the South Bronx. We offer a project-based program in tandem with our dual-language approach that supports our students in becoming bilingual and biliterate. The mission of the American Dream School is to develop academic excellence in both Spanish and English, preparing students to excel in college and become leaders in their communities.

The American Dream School is seeking a bilingual (Spanish / English) motivated and engaging History Teacher who is committed to co-teaching and serving English Language Learners and cultivating bilingualism and biliteracy. The ideal candidate has a passion for both reading and history. He / she will see this position as an opportunity to teach high schoolers not only how to become successful readers but how to actually enjoy history. This candidate will be able to create an environment where abstract concepts and discussions are obtainable for all students (including a large ELL population) and are able to merge historical content with modern themes in today's current events.

Responsibilities : INSTRUCTIONAL

  1. Implement and support in the development of a rigorous cutting edge History program that develops scholars as problem solvers and analytical thinkers.
  2. Develop and teach clear and engaging lessons that follow the rigorous, Common Core-aligned American Dream curriculum
  3. Hold students accountable for high behavioral expectations and implement American Dream's behavior management system with consistency
  4. Utilize formal and informal assessment data to drive instruction and ensure student mastery of standards using Illuminate Education, our assessment platform.
  5. Implement a co-teaching model consistently to best support student learning needs.
  6. Promotes a sense of urgency in learning
  7. Assist in the distribution, collection, and grading of tests and homework assignments
  8. Create meaningful interim assessments that will help drive instruction and prepare students for success on the Regents Exam
  9. Maintain accurate records and create reports
  10. Build a warm and inclusive classroom environment, implementing the practices of Responsive Classroom
  11. Accept ultimate responsibility for the academic progress of his or her students, and work to actively overcome setbacks

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

  1. Prepare reports on student academic performance for staff and / or administrators
  2. Tutor and assist students individually or in small groups
  3. Create annual goals for students' IEP
  4. Implement and track the progress of annual goals of students' IEPs as it pertains to your content area
  5. Write progress reports (Present levels of Performance) for students as requested
  6. Participate in yearly IEP conferences
  7. Establish appropriate goals and implement modifications for each student, as needed

OTHER PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Teach one section of an elective course, credit recovery or serve as an advisor for a student club
  2. Actively participate in grade-level meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development, including an annual Teacher Academy
  3. Participate in teacher-parent conferences regarding students' progress or problems
  4. Supervise and manage students in all spaces and during transitions, upholding ADS core values, rules, and policies
  5. Instruct, maintain, and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and material
  6. Assist with breakfast / lunch duties, as needed
  7. Actively participate in opportunities to strengthen her / his own pedagogical skills as well as contribute to the learning of colleagues
  8. Contribute to the school's smooth and efficient operation by fulfilling required administrative duties, responsibilities, and maintaining open and proactive communication with colleagues
  9. Create and maintain bulletin boards to showcase student work
  10. Engage in a minimum of two peer observations per month and provide written feedback

Minimum Qualifications :

  1. Bilingual Spanish / English; preferred
  2. Bachelor's degree in History or related field, Master's preferred
  3. New York State Teaching Certification 7-12 or Special Education 7-12 is required (accepting valid Teaching Certifications from other U.S. states)
  4. Strong organizational, data tracking, and analysis skills
  5. Maintain confidentiality, meet deadlines, complete assignments with consistent accuracy
  6. Tech-savvy; familiarity and experience with Microsoft Office, Gmail, Google docs / drive
