Job Description

High School Counselor

Full-Time for the 2025-26 School Year

School: Bishop McDevitt High School

City & State: Harrisburg, PA

NATURE OF POSITION: Under limited supervision, implements counseling program designed to increase students' academic, social, emotional, and environmental strengths; assists other staff as assigned; performs related professional and administrative duties.

REPORTS TO: High School Principal

Duties may include:

  1. Meeting with students and formulating success plans involving students and parents.
  2. Planning and promoting programs for students' academic, social, or emotional growth, such as PSAT/SAT testing, curriculum fairs, career fairs, honors assemblies, graduation, enrichment, remediation, scholarships, and parent programs.
  3. Meeting with students at least once each semester.
  4. Working with students with attendance or academic issues referred by staff or parents.
  5. Ensuring students are aware of graduation, college admission, NCAA requirements, and scheduling needs.
  6. Guiding students in course selection aligned with interests and career plans.
  7. Helping students develop post-secondary plans and complete college applications.
  8. Organizing standardized assessments and interpreting results upon request.
  9. Maintaining accurate records for each student.
  10. Making schedule adjustments appropriate to students' abilities and goals.
  11. Facilitating small groups for students with common needs.

Interpersonal Relationships

  1. Demonstrates positive relations with students, staff, and parents.

Professional Responsibilities

  1. Participates in professional growth activities.
  2. Follows diocesan and state policies and procedures.
  3. Assumes responsibilities outside the counseling center as related to the school.
  4. Demonstrates professional responsibility.

Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in secondary guidance counseling or related field, with 2-3 years of secondary school counseling experience or equivalent.
  2. Preferred: Valid state Guidance Counselor certification.
  3. Must have a valid state driver’s license.
