Job summary

The ROCORI Public School District is seeking a head coach for the high school athletic program. The role entails teaching fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training while fostering character, self-discipline, and pride of accomplishment among student-athletes.

The coach will pursue ongoing professional development through clinics, observations, and consultation, under the supervision of the athletic director and high school principals.

  • Serves as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.
Job Goal

To instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success, while demonstrating behaviors that foster socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, self‑confidence, and pride of accomplishment.

To continue upgrading knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.

General

The success of athletic programs strongly influences the community’s image. Public exposure and pressure for winning performance are taxing, but they must not override objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health. The position includes unique aspects such as extended time, risk of injury, and due‑process challenges.

In situations not specifically covered, the coach must exercise common sense and good judgment.

Reports To

The athletic director and, in conjunction with high school principals.

Supervises

Head coach must advise, coordinate, and support staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Has thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the ROCORI Schools' Board of Education and implements them by the entire staff of the sports program.
  • Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements them consistently and interprets them for staff.
  • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels.
  • Is aware of all mandatory public, staff, and departmental meetings that require attendance.
Staff Responsibilities
  • Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff; designs conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure awareness of the overall program.
  • Trains and informs staff, encouraging professional growth through clinic attendance.
  • Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, and at season end analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates assistants.
  • Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.
Administrative Duties
  • Assists the athletic director with scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournament and special sport events.
  • Prepares for scheduled sport events or practices, adheres to facility times, and coordinates with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment.
  • Advises the athletic director and recommends policy or procedural changes.
Student Responsibilities
  • Serves as a mentor to each athlete, promoting characteristic traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Monitors student athlete grades and conduct.
  • Provides assistance, guidance, and safeguards at all practices, games, and trips.
  • Provides training rules and regulations specific to the sport.
  • Initiates injury, medical attention, and emergency programs and policies.
  • Completes paperwork for all disabling injuries on proper forms and submits within 24 hours.
  • Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians; determines discipline; manages due‑process enforcement; contracts parents when a student becomes ineligible.
  • Assists athletes in college or advanced educational selection.
Finance and Equipment
  • Participates in budgeting with the athletic director and establishes equipment requirements for the next season.
  • Recommends equipment guidelines regarding type, style, color, and technical specifications.
  • Operates within budget appropriations.
  • Is accountable for all equipment and collects costs for lost or unreturned items.
  • Arranges issuance, storage, reconditioning, and annual inventory of equipment.
  • Marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitors equipment rooms, authorizes entry, issuance, and requisition.
  • Permits athletes to be in authorized areas only.
  • Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games to ensure cleanliness and maintenance.
  • Secures doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instills respect for equipment and school property.
Public Relations
  • Organizes parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.
  • Promotes the sport within the school through recruiting athletes who are not in another sport and promotes the sport outside the school through news media, little league programs, and other feasible methods.
  • Ensures quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
  • Maintains good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Presents schedules, tournaments, and results to media.

The stipend for this position is $4,984.
