Job summary

Iowa Department of Corrections seeks a High Risk Unit Officer to engage high‑risk individuals, ensure compliance, and support public safety via field operations and specialized supervision. The role emphasizes a balance of enforcement and rehabilitation in a high‑stakes environment.

Uniform peace officer position with equipment and assigned vehicle; strong knowledge of Iowa Code and evidence‑based practices is essential to protect communities and support successful reentry.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field.
• Total of seven years of education and/or full-time experience (30 semester hours = 1 year).
• Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes thirty months of full-time work as a Probation/Parole Officer 2.

Responsibilities

• Lead Field Operations & Maintain a Strong Community Presence – conduct investigations, surveillance, home visits, pursuit, apprehension, and arrests of high‑risk individuals under supervision.
• Apply Advanced Law Enforcement Skills – ensure compliance, mitigate risks, and promote public safety; conduct home visits, searches, field checks, and execute warrants.
• Respond with Urgency & Professionalism – act swiftly in emergencies, disturbances, and crisis situations with de-escalation and defensive tactics as needed.
• Balance Enforcement with Rehabilitation – use treatment-and-accountability approaches, cognitive-behavioral interventions, and case planning to reduce recidivism.
• Conduct Specialized Supervision – assess individuals with complex needs, perform urinalysis/breathalyzer tests, and maintain supervision compliance.
• Prepare & Present Critical Reports – deliver high-quality written and oral reports for courts, parole boards, and agencies.
• Collaborate with Law Enforcement & Community Partners – build relationships to support reentry and public safety efforts.
• Utilize Law Enforcement Tools & Tactics – conduct searches, monitor activity, detain/arrest when necessary, operate law enforcement vehicles.
