Job Description and Requirements:

The Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) is seeking a High-Performance Computing (HPC) Software Consultant (Part-Time, 20 hours/week) to join our ICDS Roar system Client Support Team.

ICDS collaborates with researchers across Penn State’s colleges and campuses, providing access to the Roar supercomputer and supporting computational research. The role involves supporting Roar users and advancing research through software compilation, testing, troubleshooting, and application implementation.

Work Arrangement:

This position offers a hybrid work model with at least 4 days/week on-site.

Responsibilities:
  1. Assist researchers in compiling and testing software on Roar.
  2. Troubleshoot research-related issues.
  3. Implement scientific applications and optimize their use on Roar.
  4. Build, test, and administer scientific software applications on Roar.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Experience running scientific applications in HPC environments.
  • Proficiency with Linux/UNIX systems.
  • Application optimization and development on Linux/UNIX.
  • Programming skills in C/C++, Fortran, Python, Julia, R, Bash.
  • Knowledge of queuing systems (Moab, Torque, Slurm, SGE).
  • Strong communication skills, able to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Customer service experience, preferably in technical support/help desk roles.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly and independently.
