Job summary

Smithfield Foods in Cofield, NC is seeking a Herdsperson to assist Herd Technicians in daily animal care and farm tasks. The role supports welfare, growth, and breeding, with on-the-job paid training and a full-time schedule.

Expect physical work outdoors, adherence to safety and animal welfare policies, and participation in maintaining production records. Responsibilities include feeding, vaccinating, moving animals, and operating farm equipment as directed.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED preferred.
• Previous livestock handling helpful.
• Ability to do hard physical labor.
• Weekend, evening, and holiday work required as needed.
• Must be able to work an average 48-hour work week.

Responsibilities

• Feeds, waters, vaccinates, and performs general animal husbandry tasks including basic veterinary procedures.
• Assists in moving animals and maintaining efficient animal flows.
• Sanitizes and washes multiple areas on the farm using high pressure equipment.
• Processes piglets, including injections, castration, docking tails, and ear notching.
• Maintains accurate production information and updates department records.
• Takes care of animals health and welfare and follows SOPs and training guides.
• Assists with facility and equipment maintenance and with barn/office cleanliness.
