Job summary

Missouri Botanical Garden seeks a data-entry and imaging specialist for the Herbarium to image, catalogue, and curate specimens from a vast global collection. Core duties include pulling, barcoding, imaging, data capture, and QA, with mentorship to expand taxonomic knowledge and nomenclature updates.

The role requires 1–3 years in herbarium data entry, strong typing, and good collaboration and time-management skills.

Qualifications

• One to three years related experience in general data entry in a herbarium or research collections.
• Basic knowledge of digital photography, including color standardization, metadata capture, and archival file storage.
• Basic knowledge of botanical terminology strongly desired.
• Excellent typing skills and data entry skills. Ability to read cursive writing.
• Must be punctual, dependable, a self-starter, and possess the ability to effectively multi-task and work under minimal supervision.
• The Garden is committed to safety and vaccination requirements; travel clearances may be required for international travel.

Responsibilities

• Pulls, barcodes, images, and refiles specimens to ensure timely completion of grant deliverables.
• Transcribes label data from specimen images using Tropicos, the Garden’s database.
• Engages in quality control checks to ensure high image and data quality.
• Develops and tests workflows to optimize digitization efficiency and data quality.
• Reviews label transcriptions for accuracy prior to Tropicos entry.
• Attends curatorial mentorship workshops to grow taxonomy and curation skills.
• Follows safety standards and reports accidents promptly.
