Job Summary
Under indirect supervision, provides and manages direct medical evaluation, diagnosis, procedures, and care for patients within a recognized area of practice, or for a specified patient population.

Core Job Responsibilities

  1. Provides and manages direct patient care, including physical examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnoses, and treatment for a specified patient population.
  2. Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens as appropriate to assessed medical conditions.
  3. Refers patients to specialists and relevant patient care resources as appropriate.
  4. Trains and supervises medical students and residents engaged in specialty activities and procedures, as appropriate.
  5. May manage the daily operations of a specific medical program, patient care unit, or other function.
  6. Directs and coordinates the patient care activities of nursing and support staff as required.
  7. Follows established organizational, departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
  8. Participates in health promotion, education, and prevention programs as appropriate.
  9. Performs related duties as directed or indicated.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Medical degree (M.D. or D.O.) and successful completion of a residency and internship.
  • Experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, which may include residency in a related medical specialty.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for medical care.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of community medical diagnostic and patient care services in area of medical expertise.
  • Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and students.
  • Knowledge of relevant drugs and patient care aids, with ability to prescribe dosages and instruct patients.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and workshops.
  • Knowledge of current principles, methods, and procedures for medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms and progress.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

  • Current NYS Certification/Licensure
  • Federal DEA Certification
  • Board certification or eligibility in specified medical specialty, or relevant license or certification.
