Position Summary
Sets up and operates Horizontal Milling centers with HeidenHain controls to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts by performing the essential functions and responsibilities of the role. Trains other employees on machine setup and operation as needed.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
- Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
- Measure and mark reference points on materials or workpieces as guides for machining.
- Select, align, and secure fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials.
- Calculate and set Heidenhain controls to regulate machining factors such as speeds, feeds, coolant flow, depth, and angle of cut; or input commands for computerized machine control media.
- Start and observe machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust controls as necessary.
- Collaborate with engineering to analyze challenges and develop optimal solutions.
- Mentor and train less experienced employees during production.
- Maintain a professional, safe, and clean environment by punctuality, following company policies, wearing safety gear, and adhering to safety practices.
- Foster teamwork by establishing effective relationships with managers, directors, and colleagues to achieve shared goals.
- Comply with GSM Code of Ethics and Business Conduct and adhere to all applicable laws and regulations.
Minimum Requirements
- Ability to balance castings and weldments to optimal material conditions, preventing warpage post-machining.
- Proficiency in G-code and Heidenhain programming, tooling, and fixturing.
- Self-sufficient in machining and production processes.
- Capability to machine large, complex parts.
- Proficient with measurement tools such as height gauges, calipers, micrometers, gage pins, and optical comparators.
- Strong troubleshooting skills.
- Expertise in reading blueprints and specifications.
- Ability to diagnose equipment issues through observation and listening.
- Knowledge of mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry (preferred).
- Expertise in work holding device design and application.
- Skilled in deburring and finishing techniques.
- Knowledge of tapping, threading, and thread forms.
- Experienced with materials, cutting speeds, and feeds.
- Ability to plan and execute machining sequences from start to finish.
