Job summary

McLennan County is seeking a Heavy Truck Driver for the Road and Bridge team to perform skilled truck operations, road maintenance, and construction of county roads and bridges. The role requires a Texas CDL-A, a clean driving record, and the ability to operate manual transmission.

Responsibilities include transporting gravel and asphalt, inspecting and maintaining equipment, enforcing DOT rules, and coordinating with foremen.

Qualifications

• A valid Texas CDL-Class A license and a good driving record.
• Must be able to operate vehicles with manual transmission (stick shift).
• Over one year experience driving a tractor/dump-trailer combination.
• Three years of stable work experience.
• Working knowledge of road construction procedures and practices: knowledge of DOT guidelines.
• Knowledge of traffic control techniques.
• Ability to make independent decisions, communicate effectively with employees and the general public.
• Basic computer and reporting skills.

Responsibilities

• Hauls gravel and asphalt in trailer dump truck, performs road maintenance or construction.
• Transports equipment and supplies; inspects specialty vehicles and heavy equipment for proper operating condition; repairs and performs maintenance as needed.
• Maintains and controls traffic at work sites and enforces DOT rules; reports unsafe acts or conditions.
• Occasional operation of motor graders, brooms, loaders, backhoes, skid steers, tractors, mowers, dump trucks, or similar equipment.
• Patches potholes, fills road washouts and installs/cleans culverts.
• Meets with foreman for scheduling and assignments; assists bridge crew when needed.
• Regular attendance and timeliness are required.

Heavy Truck Driver (Road and Bridge team)

The Heavy Truck Driver is a part of the Road and Bridge team. This team is responsible for construction and maintenance of roads and bridges in the county that are not part of the state highway system or with a municipality. The role performs skilled duties associated with the operation of trucks and repair, maintenance and construction of County roads, bridges and rights-of-way; operates heavy equipment incidental to the work.

• Hauls gravel and asphalt in trailer dump truck, performs road maintenance or construction

related duties while operating equipment. Transports equipment and supplies

Inspects specialty vehicles and heavy equipment for proper operating condition,

repairs and adjusts equipment and performs maintenance and preventive maintenance as needed.

• Maintains and controls traffic at work sites
• Enforce rules and regulations according to DOT guidelines, reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries
• Occasional operation of motor graders, brooms, loaders, backhoes, skid steers, tractors, mowers, dump trucks, or similar equipment.
• Patch potholes, fill road washouts and clean storm drains. Install and clean culverts.
• Meets with foreman for scheduling and assignments
• Helps bridge crew when needed
• Regular attendance and timeliness are required

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

Works mostly outdoors.Exposed to extreme heat, cold, rain, humidity, wetness, hazardous chemicals, insects, dust, poisonous plants, unpleasant smells, fumes, traffic hazards, and physical stress from exertion. Some incumbents may have contact with buried electric, phone, or television cable lines. This position follows DOT guidelines.

PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:

• While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to stoop, bend, push and pull. May have to lift heavy boxes or objects up to 100 pounds. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Exposure to extreme heat and cold.
• Ability to see and hear hazards associated with the operation of construction equipment.
• Other physical efforts as required.

HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

This position may be required to work a flexible schedule based on the needs of the facility. The position schedule is 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Thursday.
