Job summary

Staker Parson Companies, a CRH company, is seeking a Heavy Road Construction Equipment Operator to support heavy civil and highway projects in Utah. This role operates a variety of equipment, follows safety policies, and contributes to timely project completion.

Ideal candidates bring a high school diploma or GED and 1–2 years of heavy equipment experience, a valid driver's license, and the ability to work at multiple sites.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1–2 years of heavy equipment operating experience in road or heavy civil construction.
  • Experience operating one or more types of heavy construction equipment with demonstrated proficiency.
  • Experience around underground utilities or earthwork preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy construction equipment safely and efficiently (graders, excavators, dozers, loaders, rollers, scrapers, backhoes, skid steers, haul trucks).
  • Perform grading, excavation, earthmoving, roadway construction, and site prep activities.
  • Read grade stakes, site plans, blueprints, and GPS machine control systems.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report maintenance needs.

Position Overview

Heavy Road Construction Equipment Operators is a skilled poition which supports heavy civil and highway construction projects. This position is responsible for operating a variety of heavy construction equipment used in roadway, site development, grading, excavation, utility, and paving operations. The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong commitment to safety, equipment care, quality workmanship, and teamwork while contributing to the successful completion of construction projects.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy construction equipment in a safe and efficient manner, including but not limited to motor graders, excavators, dozers, loaders, rollers, scrapers, backhoes, skid steers, and haul trucks.
  • Perform grading, excavation, earthmoving, roadway construction, aggregate placement, and site preparation activities.
  • Read and interpret grade stakes, site plans, blueprints, and GPS machine control systems.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections and complete required equipment inspection reports.
  • Monitor equipment performance and promptly report maintenance needs, mechanical issues, or safety concerns.
  • Maintain production and quality standards while meeting project schedules and deadlines.
  • Work closely with supervisors, forepersons, truck drivers, survey crews, and other team members to ensure efficient project execution.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, including OSHA, MSHA (where applicable), and DOT regulations.
  • Assist with labor activities when equipment operation is not required.
  • Maintain clean and organized equipment and work areas.
  • Ensure proper protection of underground and overhead utilities during excavation and grading operations.
  • Participate in safety meetings, trainings, and company-sponsored programs.
  • Adapt to changing project requirements and work assignments as needed.
  • Travel between job sites as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support operational needs.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • One to two years of heavy equipment operating experience in road construction, heavy civil construction, excavation, utility construction, or related fields.
  • Experience operating one or more types of heavy construction equipment with demonstrated proficiency.
  • Experience working around underground utilities, roadway construction, grading, or earthwork activities preferred.
Language Skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions

  • None
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Valid driver’s license required.
Competencies

To perform the job successfully; an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Be able to operate Paddle Wheel Scraper, Wheel Dozer, Excavator and Blade.
Other Skills And Abilities
  • MSHA Training
  • Familiar with GPS
Other Qualifications

Commercial Driver's License not required, but a plus.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above the employee's shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move anywhere up to 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
