Job summary

Magris Talc is seeking a heavy equipment mechanic to service and repair the mine's heavy mobile equipment (HME) fleet. You will perform routine maintenance and assist in major rebuilds to keep equipment available.

The role involves diagnosing faults, replacing worn parts, and supporting safety and HSEQ practices in a mining environment. Candidates should have strong mechanical skills and mining familiarity.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Technical/vocational school completion and/or diesel mechanic certification preferred.
• 3+ years mechanic experience.
• Mining experience preferred, surface mining experience a plus.

Responsibilities

• Servicing mobile equipment (40% of the time): performs maintenance, oil changes, fuel addition, cleaning, and parts replacement.
• Repair of mobile equipment (40% of the time): troubleshoot, diagnose faults, replace worn parts, dismantle/reassemble equipment, test performance.
• Modification of mobile equipment (5% of the time): install after-market devices and safety features.
• HSEQ support (5% of the time): participate in inspections and uphold safety standards.

• Ensures maximum availability of the mine’s HME fleet.

JOB SCOPE/DIMENSIONS

• Works on/with hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or electronic equipment systems.
• Requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching.
• Able to work outside year-round.
• Able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Key Tasks And Responsibilities

Servicing mobile equipment (40% of the time)

• Ensures compliance with company preventative maintenance practices/service schedules to ensure the operating efficiency of the equipment fleet(s). Planned maintenance for HME Mechanic II typically includes various hour-based services mid-life repairs, assists in overhauls and major rebuilds.
• Performs service tasks which can include changing oil(s), adding fuel, steam cleaning vehicles and parts, changing parts and components such as wiper blades and filters.
• Examines parts for damage or excessive wear.
• Cleans, lubricates, and performs other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
• Assists in the complete overhaul and rebuilding of major components such as engines, transmissions, radiators, torque converters, pump drives, final drives, differentials, brakes, suspensions, cylinders, and hydraulic systems.

Repair of mobile equipment (40% of the time)

• Operates and inspects machines or heavy equipment to troubleshoot defects.
• Assists in diagnosing faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.
• Repairs and replaces damaged or worn parts. Includes seals and shaft sealing rings, horns, wiring harnesses, starting switches, ignition distributors, sensors, fuel and water pumps; adjust voltage and current control units, engine idle, brakes, transmission linkages, battery cables, and engine components.
• Assist in dismantling and reassembling heavy equipment.
• Tests mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers’ specifications.

Modification of mobile equipment (5% of the time)

• Installs after-market devices.
• Fabricates and installs safety devices such as guarding, handrails, and catwalks.
• Checks function of auto-lube and fire suppression devices.

Actively supporting/participating in the company’s Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) functions (5% of the time)

• Involves performing HSEQ inspections, interactions, and reporting.
• Achieves/maintains both personal and company compliance with HSEQ standards, policies, and procedures (e.g. isolation of equipment).
• Perform other duties and functions as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Other Characteristics

• Working knowledge of various techniques for removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories.
• Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory applying to HME
• Able to use basic tools such as wrenches, sockets, torque wrenches, brake tools, and screwdrivers as well as test/measurement devices such as feeler gauges, depth gauges, circuit testers, micrometers, and dial indicators.
• Able to read and interpret parts’ lists, manufacturer’s repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
• Familiarity with cranes, hoists, and rigging techniques.
• Computer skills a plus
• Welding experience and/or certification a plus
• MSHA training a plus
• First Aid and CPR training a plus

Other Important Functions

• Oversight of/exposure to contractors
• Working under guidance/supervision.
• Job involves the use of both lube and service trucks in addition to both company and personal tools/equipment.

SPECIFIC ASPECTS

• Familiarity to the mine’s HME including hydraulic shovels, excavators, wheel loaders, track dozers, haul trucks, motor graders, drills, and various other support equipment.
• Must wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including gloves, hardhat, steel-toed boots, and safety eyewear as well as other as-needed PPE such as fall protection.
