Job summary

City of Keller is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Water & Wastewater division. The role supports construction, maintenance, and repair of water and wastewater systems, operating heavy equipment and leading a crew to ensure safe, efficient work.

The position requires a High School diploma or GED with at least two years in related field, a Class A CDL, and willingness to work a 36-hour week schedule with early morning shifts. On-site work with city crews and emergency response.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required; minimum two years of related experience in construction, municipal water/wastewater repair or maintenance.
• Grade C Water Distribution and/or Class II Wastewater Certification from TCEQ preferred.
• Valid State of Texas Class A CDL required.
• Ability to work with heavy equipment safely and follow directions, contribute to team goals.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment and support Water/Wastewater Division for installation, maintenance, repair of pipelines, hydrants and manholes.
• Lead the crew in safety, setup, and post‑use inspections; manage daily tasks and material handling.
• Respond to after-hours calls and emergency situations; perform minor repairs and assist other departments as needed.
• Follow SOPs, traffic control rules, and safety procedures to ensure site safety.

This position is based on a 36-hour workweek with the following schedule:

Monday - Thursday, 6:00am - 3:00pm.

Position Function - Under the direction of the Director of Public Works and/or Designee, performs assigned duties necessary to support the Water & Wastewater Division to ensure the proper installation, maintenance, repair and/or modification of water and wastewater pipelines, mains, valves, meters, hydrants, and manholes. Performs as the lead heavy equipment operator .

Essential Duties % of Performance

Performs assigned duties necessary to support the Water/Wastewater Division by ensuring the proper construction, repair, and maintenance of water and wastewater pipelines, mains, valves, hydrants and manholes. Duties include, but are not limited to: operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and specialized equipment used for excavation and hydro-excavation activities; daily pre-use inspection of equipment; preparation and loading of necessary materials for equipment operation; safe, efficient operation of equipment; and daily post-use maintenance and inspection of equipment. Responsible for ensuring work site safety and traffic control in compliance with rules/regulations/SOP's. 80%

Performs duties necessary to support the Water and Wastewater division by assisting crews with manual labor, responding to after hour calls and during emergency situations, and performing minor repairs and maintenance on various equipment and vehicles.
May be required to assist other City departments. Performs all duties assigned to the crew he/she leads to include, but limited to: manual labor, heavy equipment operations, etc. 15%

Duties are performed primarily within an outdoor environment or setting. Possible exposure to electrical and chemical hazards, water, sewage, vibrations, loud noise, inclement weather, dust, allergens, and mold.

Requirements/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Required knowledge and experience is normally obtained through the completion of a curriculum resulting in either a High School diploma or GED, and minimum of two (2) years of work related experience in Construction, Municipal Water/Wastewater repair or maintenance, or related field is required.

Grade "C" Water Distribution and/or Class II Wastewater Collection Certification from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, preferred.

Valid State of Texas Class A CDL is required.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City employees and officials, and the general public.

Ability to take and follow oral instructions, as well as hand signals.

Ability to work under high demands, short time constraints, and the pressure of a fast-paced work environment.

Ability to properly operate heavy equipment and hydro-excavation equipment.

Thorough knowledge of construction methods, materials and practices with particular emphasis on water and wastewater construction and repair.

Thorough knowledge of work place safety practices and procedures, including but not limited to: lockout/tagout, traffic safety, spotting, etc.

Must be able to work "on-call" or emergency hours.

Must be able to work outside normal business hours.

Must exhibit attention to detail, accuracy, and safety.

Must be able to communicate and present oneself in a professional manner.

Must be able to understand and comprehend technical instructions and manuals.
