Performs skilled work in the operation of sludge hauling equipment. Responsible for tasks of moderate to high difficulty involving the safe operation and routine maintenance of assigned equipment. Tasks may be performed under hazardous conditions, requiring employees to be alert and careful. Under the supervision of the Public Utilities Chief Plants Operator and Wastewater Plants Superintendent, employees are expected to exercise initiative and independent judgment. Performance is reviewed through observation and results.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate equipment including roll-off trucks and sludge trailers.
- Transport employees, materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites.
- Transport sludge, dirt, construction debris, yard waste, and other materials to designated locations; transfer liquid sludge between treatment plants.
- Perform routine maintenance and servicing on equipment, including checking tire pressure, motor oil, hydraulic oil, and fuel levels.
- Inspect equipment visually and report maintenance or repair needs; ensure equipment is properly equipped, serviced, and cleaned.
- Perform manual and labor tasks using hand and power tools, either independently or in conjunction with equipment operation.
- Use tractor to fill sludge containers as needed.
- Operate additional heavy equipment such as street sweepers, excavators, backhoes, sewer vacuum trucks (VAC-CON), and others upon training.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- At least two (2) years of experience in related work, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid Florida CDL-B Driver’s License with a satisfactory Motor Driving Record.
- Class “B” CDL with Air Brake and Tank Endorsements required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance of complex motorized equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, safety procedures, and occupational hazards.
- Skill in operating motorized specialty equipment and hand/power tools.
- Ability to drive standard transmission vehicles.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs., perform manual tasks, and work in challenging conditions.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and work in various environmental conditions, including extreme weather and confined spaces.
