Job summary

Chesterfield County Utilities department seeks a Heavy Equipment Operator to operate backhoes, excavators, loaders, trenchers, crane trucks and dump trucks towing trailers. A high school diploma or GED and three years of experience are required, along with a valid CDL Class A and willingness to obtain tanker endorsement within one year.

The position involves digging around sewer and water mains, performing asphalt repairs, light maintenance, and other related duties.

Qualifications

• 3 years of experience operating heavy machinery (backhoes, excavators, loaders, dump trucks).
• Valid CDL Class A license required with tanker endorsement within 1 year of employment.
• Knowledge of OSHA construction safety standards for excavations and trenching.

Responsibilities

• Operate rubber tire backhoes and excavators to dig excavations around sewer and water mains.
• Perform asphalt repairs and operate other construction equipment for sewer line maintenance and repair.
• Support other assigned tasks as needed; participate in a Career Development Plan with salary incentives based on funding.

Job description

High school diploma or GED and three years of experience operating heavy motorized equipment such as rubber tire backhoes, excavators and loaders, trenchers, crane trucks and dump trucks towing trailers; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Emphasis on backhoe operation. Ability to perform heavy lifting required. Ability to perform light maintenance on heavy equipment. Ability to work overtime as needed to include weekends and holidays. Knowledge of OSHA construction standard requirements related to excavations and trench safety. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class "A" required with the ability to obtain tanker endorsement within one year of employment

This position is a federally regulated DOT position and is subject to random drug testing and alcohol testing. The use of medical marijuana for this position is prohibited.

Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.

Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.

Operate rubber tire backhoes and excavators to dig excavations around sewer & water mains; perform asphalt repairs in roadways, and operate other construction equipment and perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to sewer lines maintenance and repair. Perform other work as required. This position is part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) and offers career progression opportunities and salary incentives, as funding permits, based on performance, qualifications, and experience.
